This is certainly an eye-catching heading with almost everyone thinking, “Wow, is this for real?” Well, yes and no. Of course there’s a big difference between travelling for free and paying full fare but there is also the possibility of travelling for a very cheap fee which makes it almost the same as free travel. Let’s just look at the various possibilities.

The first is having someone sponsor you to travel in return for you performing a task or tasks to benefit the sponsor. It could be that you write a report on your trip which is published by the sponsor who could make money from your report. Or you could travel as a support for your sponsor. They may want someone to fetch and carry for them on their trip or look after a child or elderly relative. Of course doing simple tasks for your host is one thing but having a desirable skill is another. If you are skilled at carpentry, auto repairs or say music, you can use your talent to pay for your free travel and accommodation. People are willing to barter. You play at my concert or party or church and we’ll transport you to the next town and give you free board while you stay here.

Travel pals and house sitting are two more ways to boost your travel4free experiences. If someone is planning a car trip of some distance, they may advertise for a travel companion. It might mean sharing the driving and fuel costs or not. But it is certainly a cheap if not a free way to get across the country. Then there are people who go away for some time and want their house looked after.
